The home was owned by one of the Huon Valleys' prominent apple and cherry growing families and five generations later, the same family continue to farm the land surrounding Matildas in this peaceful part of the valley.
The property consists of eight acres of well established gardens, parkland, old trees and Heritage buildings, and is renowned in the Huon Valley Tasmania. In early Spring, thousands of bulbs are on display as the garden comes alive - daffodils, iris, tulips and blue bells to name a few, in addition to the fruit tree blossoms scattered throughout. Later in the season the roses make their appearance, with many of the old English varieties scattered throughout the various beds with their elegant blossoms on display.
Matildas is also known for a rare Chilean Puya bush (Puya Berteroniana), which originated in South America and was planted here many years ago. It's exotic flowers can be seen in late summer, and there are apparently only two examples of the Puya bush in Tasmania. At this time, most of our fruit trees are displaying their wares and we are kept busy making jam from our apricot, cherry-plum, pear, peach, plum and mulberry trees. For our guests this is a time of eating your way around the garden.
Later, in the Autumn the property becomes a riot of coppers, reds and oranges as our old Maple, Oak, Hawthorn and Silver Birch trees begin to change. Autumn gardens in the Huon Valley are spectacular and Matildas is no exception. The garden truly reflects the seasons and there is something to see all around the year. Mountain River runs at our lower boundary, and this spills into the magnificent Huon River, a kilometre or so from Matildas of Ranelagh in the Huon Valley.
The main homestead at Matildas is considered a landmark and is one of the most important buildings in the Huon Valley. The property has long been recognised as historically significant, and it's prominence in Tasmanian apple production at one time earned the farm a brief visit from the Queen during a royal tour of the area in 1970.
A warm and welcoming place as well as luxury accommodation, Matildas has gained a reputation for being one of the friendliest places to stay in Tasmania. The property has been recognised for excellence as recipient of the Tasmanian Peoples Choice Award and multiple runner-up. American travel magazine Fodors have awarded Matildas it's "Fodors Choice" award on two occasions, in 2007 and 2009. When considering Tasmania accommodation, Matildas is the place to relax, unwind and feel right at home.
Furnished with antiques, collectables and artwork, the rooms at Matildas are tasteful and elegant in decoration, with everything needed to make your stay comfortable. The Heritage Bed and Breakfast accommodation consist of the following rooms:
